Active Relationship Center (ARC) has worked in Healthy Marriage
Initiative programs since 1997. Active Relationships
curricula has been used in a multitude of state and federal
grants and is currently involved in a variety of projects.
ARC’s history includes involvement in the birth of both
the Dallas and the Rio Grande Valley initiatives, and ARC healthy
marriage curriculums are used worldwide for healthy marriage
programming (U.S., Europe and Asia).
There are many efficient and best practices of the trade in
the area of healthy marriage education. ARC is a healthy marriage
grantee and also has been in the business of marriage education
for over 10 years. Active Relationships Center (ARC) is pleased
to offer a plan for help to your community organization to
build and administer healthy marriage education.

Technical Assistance by ARC
for Healthy Marriage Education in Your Community
Active Relationships Center is pleased to offer a plan for help to your
community organization to build and administer healthy marriage education.
There are many efficient and best practices of the trade. ARC is a healthy
marriage grantee and also has been in the business of marriage education
for 10 years.
We have a team of experienced professionals that can assist
you during the process of constructing your healthy marriage
education program, producing a public awareness campaign, and
assisting with program needs. First - determine if our Active
Marriage program fits your needs.
Steps:

(1) To see choices for training (and costs to train) your leaders
to teach marriage education, click here for “Certification

(2) To ask about partnering with ARC for Technical
Assistance or for a letter of support (MOU):

Note: Cost for participant materials for the new 8-hour
best practices program (in Spanish or English) -$21/book or
$19 for orders of 50 or more. Couples can share a book.
Inclusion in Grants:
Another recommendation is the following for your grant: Include
in your grant that you would like to seek assistance
from ARC in building
your project.
(ARC has a strong track record for building HMI communities.)
Here is an example:
*Part 1:
Budget approximately $10,000 for direct start-up assistance
(months 1-5) and $1,000 per month for the remaining months
of the grant) for 1:1 technical assistance from ARC to help you accomplish
the following:
- Create Public Awareness Materials and Campaigns to inspire
participants to come to marriage education classes. (recruiting
participants for classes)
- Screen for effective presenters and keep them motivated
- Learn organizational how to’s (utilize all
our forms, fliers, etc.!) and how to efficiently build a network
of providers
- Design events that the public loves to attend!
-Teach DO’s and Do NOT’s (ethics) to make classes more fun
and safe
*Part 2:
Year One expense for Technical Assistance -$16,000 .
Build
in site visits to your site for hands on work. Fee, transportation
and lodging $2,000/visit.
Year Two - forward -- $12,000 + $2,000/site visit
as needed throughout.

DHHS and ACF Curricula
Active Relationships Center has been in partnership with a number
of community agencies, including housing projects, Head Start and community
marriage projects to name a few, to assist in promoting healthy marriages
through training leaders in these communities to teach Active Relationships
curricula and providing seminars directly to people using Active Relationships
curricula.
The Active Marriage and Best Practices program includes
the six “required” key content areas of the Administration
for Children and Families (ACF):
- Commitment to healthy marriage (for current or future relationship)
- Communication
- Conflict resolution
- Beliefs about marriage or family
- Benefits of marriage
- Qualities of healthy relationships and healthy marriages
It also includes all 26 “advised” content areas and several “optional” areas
important for healthy relationships such as communication skills, conflict
resolution, anger and trigger management and romance!

HEAD START RFP’s ask that Head Start organizations associate with
organizations with demonstrated healthy marriage work.
ARC has worked in the Healthy Marriage Initiative since 1997.
ARC’s history includes involvement in the birth of both the Dallas
and the Rio Grande Valley initiatives and ARC healthy marriage curriculums
are used worldwide for healthy marriage programming (U.S., Europe and Asia).

ACF Curricula
NOTE: For
your convenience this form is provided and “filled out” regarding
the Active Marriage and Best Practices 8-12 Hour Program so
that you will know how this program may meet your goals and ACF’s
suggestions.
1. Name of curriculum:
Active
Education and Best Practices: for Healthy Marriages and Relationships (Company
name: Active Relationships)
2. Identify the learning
goals for participants as stated in the curriculum. The
following are goals from Active Marriages and Best Practices program
· State
the importance of commitment in successful long-term relationships
· State
the importance of long-term vision, patience and perseverance in successful
long-term relationships
· List
components of successful communication, including listening and speaking
skills for effective communication and to reduce conflict
· Identify
specific behaviors that promote successful relationships and those
that do not, including body language and non-verbal communication
· Identify
steps to manage personal emotions
· List
steps of the S.M.A.R.T. process conflict resolution tool to manage
disagreements
· Identify
beliefs, attitudes and values about marriage or family
· Identify
values, attitudes associated with long-term, low-conflict partnerships

research-based qualities of healthy relationships and healthy marriages

benefits of marriage for adults, children, community
Number of sessions
required or recommended in curriculum: (For
Active Marriage and Best Practices) 5,
2, or 1 session. Hours per session recommended
in curriculum: 2.25 (for 5 sessions) or
4.75 (for 2 sessions) or 8 hours (for 1 day-long
session) Total hours: 8-12
(REMINDER:
For many ACF funded projects, it is required that participants
experience a minimum of eight hours of instruction delivered over
time, or that program hours be aligned with the recommended duration
based on the guidelines of the curriculum itself.)

Active
Relationships curriculums are currently used in
the general population and for unique populations:
refugee
communities (Somali, Russian, Boat People, Cambodian),
military (Army, Air Force, National Guard), Schools (Independent
School Districts and Private Schools), Native American
Community, Hispanic Community (in Spanish or English),
in Head Start Communities, Federally Funded Healthy Marriage
Coalitions and Agencies (including YWCA). Active Relationships
Company is a federally awarded, Healthy Marriage agency
for the Lower Rio Grande Valley-Cameron County, Texas
to serve Hispanic Couples and Youth. Active Relationships
classes are in (but not limited to) to the following
countries: U.S., England, Germany, South Korea, Italy,
Turkey. |
Research
for Active Relationships curriculums includes positive
outcomes, pre, post and follow up as recently as 2006
in the U.S. Air Force Europe and across Lower Income
Families in seven Texas cities. Research was conducted
by Baylor University School of Social Work. Research
is on-going for high school and adult populations by
healthy marriage federally funded sites.
